1. What Is a Principal Entity (PE) Registration?
A Principal Entity (PE) is the term used under TRAI TCCCPR 2018 for the business organisation that originates commercial SMS — i.e., your company. Before you can send any commercial SMS in India (OTP, transactional, promotional, or service SMS), your organisation must be registered on a TRAI-authorised DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) portal as a Principal Entity.
PE registration creates a unique PE ID — the verified digital identity of your business on the national DLT network shared by all telecom operators. Every subsequent step of DLT compliance — Sender ID (Header) registration, content template registration, and PE–TM (Telemarketer) binding chain — is linked to this PE ID.
2. Which DLT Portal Should You Register On?
India has multiple TRAI-authorised DLT portals — all interoperable with each other. You only need to register on one portal. Your PE ID will work across all telecom operators regardless of which portal you choose.
| Portal | Operator | URL |
|---|---|---|
| Airtel SmartPing This Guide | Airtel | www.smartping.live |
| Jio TrueConnect | Jio | trueconnect.jio.com |
| VILPOWER | Vodafone Idea | vilpower.in |
| BSNL UCC | BSNL | ucc.bsnl.co.in |
3. Documents Required — Complete Checklist
Keep the following documents ready as clearly scanned copies before starting the registration form. All scanned copies must have the entity name and identification number/address clearly legible.
| Document | Status | Details / Accepted Options |
|---|---|---|
| Company PAN Card | REQUIRED | PAN number allotted by the Income Tax Department. Example format: NAMES1234A. Scanned copy with entity name and PAN number clearly visible. |
| CIN / GST / TAN | ANY ONE | Company Identification Number (CIN), GST Registration Number, or TAN. Upload scanned copy of whichever is available. |
| Proof of Identity | OPTIONAL | Any one: GSTIN / Aadhaar or Unique Identity Number / Election Commission ID / Passport |
| Proof of Address | REQUIRED | Any one: Aadhaar / Unique Identity Number / Election Commission ID / Passport / Electricity Bill (not older than 3 months) / Telephone Bill (not older than 3 months) / Lease Agreement or Registered Sale Deed |
| Other Documents | OPTIONAL | Any other supporting organisational document — specify the document type when uploading. |
| Authorisation Document | REQUIRED | Letter or document authorising the named person to operate the DLT portal on behalf of the Principal Entity. Typically a board resolution, letter of authorisation, or company letterhead authorisation. |
Step 1 — Visit Portal & Click Login / SignUp
Visit www.smartping.live
Open your browser and navigate to www.smartping.live — Airtel's TRAI-authorised DLT portal. On the landing page, click the "Login / SignUp" button.

Step 2 — Select Operation Type: As Entity
Select "As Entity" and click Next
After clicking Login / SignUp, you are redirected to a page asking you to select your type of operation. Select "As Entity" — this registers your business as a Principal Entity. Do not select "As Telemarketer" (that is for SMS service providers, not businesses sending SMS). Click Next.

Step 3 — Select Company Location: Indian or Overseas
Choose Indian or Overseas
Select the location / origin of your entity. Most Indian businesses select INDIAN. If your company is incorporated outside India, select OVERSEAS — the process is similar but requires a Unique Company Identification number from your country's registration authority instead of PAN. Click Next.

Step 4 — Fill Organisation Details
Complete the registration form — Organisation section
You will be redirected to the main registration form. At the top, choose between New Registration (first-time) or Enrolment of Entity Already Registered (if you have a PE ID from another portal). Fill in these fields:
- Name of Organisation: Enter your company's legal name exactly as it appears in your PAN, CIN, or registration documents. Any mismatch with your uploaded documents causes rejection.
- Entity Type: Select Private (Pvt Ltd / LLP), Government, SEBI Approved Broker, Public (Ltd company), or Others (partnerships, sole proprietors, trusts, NGOs).
- Category of Organisation: Choose the TRAI-defined category that most closely describes your business — this affects which SMS template categories you can register.
- Email: Use your official company domain email — login credentials will be sent to this email after approval.
Step 5 — Fill Company Address
Current Address and Registered Address
Fill both the Current Address and Registered Address of your company — exactly as they appear on your submitted documents. If both addresses are the same, check the "Same As Current" checkbox to auto-fill the registered address.
Tick "Same As Current" if registered address matches current address — otherwise fill separately.
Step 6 — Upload Documents
Upload all required documents
In the Documents section, upload scanned copies of your PAN, CIN/GST/TAN, Proof of Identity, Proof of Address, and any other documents. All uploads must be clearly scanned — entity name and identification number visibly legible.
Step 7 — Authorised Person Information
Enter the details of the person who will operate the DLT portal
The Authorised Person is the individual from your organisation designated to manage the DLT portal account — registering Sender IDs, submitting templates, and managing the PE–TM binding chain. This is typically the IT Manager, Compliance Officer, or a senior marketing/operations person.
- Mobile No.: The OTP for registration verification is sent to this number — ensure it is active and accessible at the time of submission.
- Authorization Document: Upload a board resolution, letter of authorisation on company letterhead, or power of attorney designating this person to operate the DLT account.
- Terms & Conditions: The checkbox is mandatory — registration cannot be submitted without accepting the terms.
Step 8 — OTP Verification & Email Confirmation
Verify your mobile number and email address
After clicking Submit, a two-step verification process begins:
Step 8a — Mobile OTP Verification
You will receive a One Time Password on the authorised person's registered mobile number. Enter the OTP in the field provided and press Submit. If you do not receive the OTP within 2 minutes, click Resend OTP.
Step 8b — Email Verification
After OTP submission, the portal sends a verification link to your registered company email. Click the link to verify your email address. If the verification email is not in your inbox, check your Spam / Junk folder — DLT portal emails are sometimes filtered by spam systems.
Step 8c — Confirmation
Once both OTP and email are verified, your registration is submitted to the telecom operator for document review and approval.
Step 9 — Operator Approval & Receiving Login Credentials
Operator review, approval, and portal access
After your registration is submitted and verified:
- Operator Review: Your registration details and uploaded documents are reflected on the telecom operator's module for review. The operator (Airtel, in the case of SmartPing) can approve or reject your registration based on document completeness and accuracy.
- Approval Timeline: Typically 1–3 business days. Rejections typically happen when document scans are unclear, entity name does not match across documents, or the address does not match the Proof of Address.
- Login Credentials: Upon approval, your username and password are sent to your registered company email. Use these to log in to the DLT portal and proceed with Sender ID and template registration.
Overseas Entity Registration
If your organisation is incorporated outside India (Overseas), the registration process is identical to the Indian process with one key difference — instead of a PAN card, you must provide a Unique Company Identification number issued by the relevant government authority in your country of incorporation.
| Field | Overseas Requirement |
|---|---|
| Company PAN | Not required for Overseas entities |
| Unique Company Identification REQUIRED | Identification number allotted by the respective country's registration department to the entity — e.g., Company Registration Number (UK), EIN (US), ACN (Australia), Company Registration Number (Singapore) |
| Relevant Document REQUIRED | Duly scanned copy of the Unique Company Identification document — entity name and identification number clearly visible |
| CIN / GST / TAN | Optional — provide equivalent if applicable |
| All other fields | Same as Indian entity registration |
What to Do After PE Registration
PE registration is only the first of four steps required for full DLT compliance. After your PE ID is approved and you log in:
Register Sender ID (Header)
Register your 6-character alphanumeric Sender ID under your PE account — one ID per SMS category (Transactional, Promotional, Service). Go to Header Registration in the portal menu.
Register Content Templates
Submit your message templates with {#var#} variables for all SMS use cases — OTP, dispatch alerts, offers, reminders. Go to Template Registration in the portal menu. See our Template Guidelines >>
Complete PE–TM Binding Chain
Link your PE ID to Fivo SMS as your Telemarketer on the DLT portal. This is mandatory since December 2024 — without the binding chain, SMS will be blocked even with all other registrations complete. Contact Fivo SMS to initiate this step.
